Known simply as “Dave” to thousands of Eyewitness News viewers who wouldn’t miss Channel 13’s top-rated nightly newscasts, Dave Ward joined KTRK-TV in 1966 as the station’s only on-the-street news reporter and photographer. He soon came “inside” to anchor the morning newscast, then the first host of the popular “Dialing for Dollars” which evolved into “Good Morning Houston.”
Texas born and raised, Dave began his journalism career in radio in Tyler and Waco. Houston’s four-skyscraper skyline won his heart in 1962 and Houston has been home since. He won accolades for his Houston radio stations and later at Channel 13. His on-location coverage of national political conventions, the space program, and south-of-the-border stories fill his resume. He has reported on virtually every major news story of interest to Houstonians for nearly four decades, interviewing thousand of people on the air–from drug dealers to heads of state.
Dave has taken an active role in Houston’s community affairs. He served as President of the local Easter Seals Society and was host of their TV Telethons during the 1970’s; chaired the Public Affairs Advisory Board of the Houston Business Council; was a member of the Public Information Committee for the American Cancer Society; served as a member of the Leukemia Society Board of Directors; was a Board Member of the Houston Press Club of Houston; and served on the advisory board of Houston Children’s Charities. He could not begin to count the innumerable charity events he has emceed.
Dave takes pride in his active role in the establishment of the Houston Crime Stoppers Program that has become the model of excellence for similar programs across the nation and the world.
