Move for Hunger–A Story Worth Telling
One thing that always warms my heart is to see someone in our nation see a need and build their idea into something that helps humanity across the nation. One of these outstanding humans is New Jersey native and Springsteen fan Adam Lowy, who in 2009 founded Move for Hunger.
Each year, 42 million people struggle with food insecurity. 1 in 6 kids experience hunger daily. Often the only meal a child will get is the one served at school, which makes weekends, holidays and summers very challenging for families.
Adam had worked for his family’s century-old moving business and saw how much food was thrown away when people relocate. He formed an idea to put the food left behind to better use. He left the family business, partnered with national moving companies (such as Allied, Mayflower, North American), and launched Move for Hunger.
To date, Move for Hunger has collected 26 million pounds of food, which equates to approximately 21 million meals. Lowy has also partnered with real estate management teams to collect food from over 600,000 apartment units along with challenging corporations across the nation to help collect food (team building activations) to be picked up and delivered to food pantries in their areas.
In 2021 alone:
- They collected and delivered 4,674,804 pounds of food
- 3,895,670 meals were created from that food which removed 688 metric tons of CO2 off the roads for the year
- They also collected and distributed 703,574 lbs. of fresh food to food pantries
In Houston, they work with Ward North American Moving Services, who in the last year, collected 45,000 pounds of food to help those in our city who are in need.
Another interesting yet sad statistic, 35% of the food produced in this country goes to waste. With 40 million people struggling with hunger, we must do better. Adam has made major strides across our country to do just that!
Accolades bestowed upon Adam and his organization include: the VH1 Do Something Awards for his commitment to creating social change and Forbes 30 Under 30 in the Food & Drink category in 2014.
