Smiles Were Big and Hearts Were Full at Houston Children’s Charity Annual “Chariots for Children” Van Distribution

A full house gathered to watch Houston Children’s Charity (HCC) award 98 fully loaded wheelchair-accessible vans to local families at its annual “Chariots for Children” Van Distribution. This almost $5.5 million undertaking is the largest single-day donation in HCC history and is considered the largest program of its kind in the country. It coordinates nicely with the organization’s 30-year anniversary.

The earlier milestone highlights a 50% increase from the 66 vans distributed last year, largely due to a generous donation of 30 vans from Richard and Jana Fant, along with 10 vans from the Mo Aziz Family, 8 from the Guill Family, and 7 from the Petersen Family Foundation. Each specially equipped van supports children with mobility challenges, such as Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, and others, by providing dependable transportation to medical appointments, therapies, school activities and daily routines. A typical wheelchair-accessible van costs between $60,000 and $100,000, and sometimes even more. For most families, this financial barrier is overwhelming, making the “Chariots for Children” program a true blessing for the underserved community. To showcase the importance and impact of the afternoon’s distribution, an overhead shot of the 98 vans, each adorned with a large red bow and arranged in the parking lot near Willie G’s, was included in this article’s slideshow.

Excited families, van sponsors, and dignitaries filled the hotel ballroom. Mayor John Whitmire issued a proclamation designating March 23, 2026, as “Chariots for Children Day.” Houston City Council Member, At-Large, Position 3, Twila Carter, was present to address the crowd and recognize the charity in a significant way. Her words included, “Houston Children’s Charity represents the very best of Houston—neighbors stepping up for neighbors, making sure no child is left behind. Their impact is real, their reach is wide and their heart for this city is unmatched.”

Houston Children’s Charity’s President & CEO, Laura S. Ward, proudly spoke from the stage and her resounding words echoed through the crowd. She said, “This is truly a life-changing day for these families and a meaningful moment in our 30-year history. Each van represents freedom, access, and hope. As we celebrate three decades of service, we remain committed to meeting the growing needs of children and families across our community.”

Over these three decades of service to Greater Houston and the surrounding areas, 538 needy families and agencies have been awarded wheelchair-accessible vans. The ever-growing list of agencies and families in need reflects the urgent, growing demand for this critical program. The beaming smiles and gracious hearts of those who received the assistance were evident throughout the afternoon, and especially as they started the engines of their new vans!
