Real-World Impact at BRASS Reception as the Organization’s Founder and Advocate Becomes a Patient
A cocktail reception at Steak 48 in the River Oaks Shopping District was the recent setting for over 100 delighted guests who supported BRASS (Baylor Research Advocates for Student Scientists).
Event hosts Dr. Jacquie Baly, Jody Merritt and BRASS President Elsie Eckert, along with event underwriter Edna Meyer-Nelson and guest experience underwriter and BRASS Founder Myra Wilson, brought together a dynamic group of community leaders, advocates, and supporters committed to strengthening the pipeline of emerging medical researchers. The group’s mentorship of student scientists has long been central to the organization’s sole mission and design.
Heartfelt remarks from the esteemed event hosts led the way for even more heartwarming words from BRASS Scholar M.D./Ph.D. candidate Joe Zoeller of Baylor College of Medicine’s School of Biomedical Sciences, who spoke about using immunology to fight cancer. BRASS Scholar M.D./Ph.D. candidate Katya Kabotyanski enlightened listeners when she discussed groundbreaking live research in the human brain to better understand neurological function. A deeply personal moment was shared with the crowd as founder Myra Wilson used this exact approach during surgery—a full-circle event, as the organization’s founder and advocate became a patient.
Those attending connected with the BRASS Scholars and gathered important information about their groundbreaking research and personal journeys, providing the real-world impact of their life-changing works and explored ways to support and mentor these emerging physician-scientists as they continue their medical journeys.
