El Centro de Corazón Celebrates Thirty Years of “Making a Difference” at Its Annual Luncheon

For over three decades, El Centro de Corazón has served the low-income, medically underserved children, adults and families living in Houston’s East End community and the greater Houston area. Its annual luncheon, titled “Making a Difference,” once again brought 270 supporters, old and new, to River Oaks Country Club, where more than $150,000 was raised to help continue their work.

Chairpersons Vicky Dominguez, Honorary Chairs Leisa Holland-Nelson Bowman and Leila Perrin and Honorees Michele Leal Farah and Comerica Bank (attended by Jason Baker and Sineria Ordoñez) were on hand to greet their guests and friends, and with the help of emcee Cyndy Garza Roberts, set the afternoon program in motion.

El Centro CEO Marcie Mir was the first to speak, and her focus centered on the expansion of care needed in the community and the challenges still remaining regarding access to quality health services.  Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia’s office presented a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition to the organization. ABC News Correspondent and US Army Reserve Major Stephanie Ramos was the keynote speaker and gave heartfelt remarks on “Making an Impact.”

Speaking of impact, almost three-quarters of El Centro’s patients live at or below the federal poverty level, and over half of them are uninsured. This event truly helps “make a difference” in the lives of those who desperately need the community’s assistance.
