Boots, the Bob Fund, Big Bids and Bigger Hearts: Cattle Baron’s Ball Blazes a Brilliant New Frontier

Houston’s philanthropic trailblazers saddled up for a dazzling night of country swagger and extraordinary generosity as the American Cancer Society’s Houston Cattle Baron’s Ball, presented by Texas Oncology, rustled up nearly $1.3 million. Held at the Hilton Americas-Houston, the 39th annual extravaganza transformed the fourth-floor ballroom into a spirited celebration of “The New Frontier.”

Leading the charge were chairs Abby Alford and Maria Martinez, joined by Honorary Chairs Robin & Danny Klaes and Trini Mendenhall-Royalty and Philip Royalty. Backed by 100 dedicated volunteers and committee members, this powerhouse posse created a Western wonderland, where golden yellow roses, sculptural succulents and prickly cacti set the scene for an unforgettable evening.

The revelry kicked off with an exclusive VIP reception and a decidedly Texan photo opportunity: a live steer ready for its close-up. Guests explored five tempting sweepstakes prizes and the Wine, Whiskey, and Spirits Pull, setting a playful pace before the ballroom festivities unfolded.

Inside, Western-inspired fare fueled the festivities while the beloved pig races delivered squeals of excitement. Casino tables beckoned would-be high rollers, and friendly rivalries flourished as supporters embraced the evening’s exuberant mix of entertainment and giving.

KHOU 11’s Kim Castro and 93Q’s Katelyn Maida kept the program sparkling, while auctioneer Johnny “Bravo” Holloway ignited spirited bidding. Among the irresistible treasures: a 2026 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate donated by Group 1 Buick GMC North, a luxurious French Open adventure, a VIP Houston sports staycation, and so much more!

After a lively showdown of Heads or Tails, award-winning country favorites Diamond Reo turned up the musical heat. “Meet in the Middle” and “Beautiful Mess” brought irresistible energy to a dance floor brimming with celebration.

Then came the story that gave every bid, donation and dance step deeper meaning.

Johnny Griffin, a leukemia survivor and Texas Oncology patient from Sealy, shared his remarkable journey through chemotherapy, more than 20 blood transfusions and a lifesaving bone marrow transplant. His donor—a 26-year-old German firefighter and “genetic twin”—offered a second chance across an ocean. Griffin’s emotional donor letter brought the room’s attention squarely to the lives behind the cause.

That powerful appeal inspired a historic paddle raise benefiting the Bob Fund, established in memory of Bob Bowman, late husband of American Cancer Society board chair Leisa Holland-Nelson Bowman. Contributions more than doubled the ball’s previous paddle-raise record, advancing her $5 million leukemia research goal.

Applause also celebrated honorees Evelyn Leightman, Donna and Norman Lewis, HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Cancer Network and Midway.

American Cancer Society vice president Jenny Todd highlighted nearly $21 million invested in Houston this year, supporting research, treatment transportation and Hope Lodge accommodations.

By evening’s end, the most dazzling achievement was Houston’s wholehearted response. Beneath the Western glamour and country rhythms, this generous gathering helped propel the search for breakthroughs—and brighter tomorrows.

The frontier stretches onward, with donations still welcome at cattlebaronsball.org/donate, carrying the celebration’s generous spirit into the lifesaving work ahead.
