Five-Alarm Fabulous: Houston’s 9th Annual “Red Hot Gala” Turns Up the Heat—and Raises $835,000
Houston’s bravest know a thing or two about answering the call. At HPFFA’s 9th-anniversary “Red Hot Gala,” their supporters responded in spectacular fashion: $835,000 in generosity, wrapped in an evening of stirring tributes, spirited bidding and enough runway heat to give the ballroom thermostat a workout.
The Royal Sonesta Houston welcomed 550 guests and firefighters to celebrate the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association Charitable Foundation. With gala chairmen Elizabeth and Alan Stein leading the charge, the evening honored the courage, commitment, and compassion of those who rush toward emergencies—and the community determined to stand behind them.
Before the festivities even began, the fundraising thermometer was already soaring. More than $550,000 had been committed by the evening, providing a tremendous launch for supporting firefighter training, equipment purchases, health programs and community initiatives.
Helping fuel that momentum were Honorary Co-chair Edna Meyer-Nelson and returning presenting sponsors Bobbie Nau, Hallie Vanderhider and Bobby Dees. Gifts ranging from $50 to $75,000 demonstrated that this village of supporters had both a mighty heart and an impressive reach.
The evening made its intentions clear from the start: come ready to celebrate and keep that bidding hand limber.
A photo wall and firefighter silhouettes by Let It Fly set the scene, while The Moment Band supplied an irresistible cocktail-hour soundtrack. With more than 130 auction packages vying for attention, guests had plenty of reasons to circulate, compare notes and make another pass at a coveted prize. Moving this crowd to dinner required flickering lights and a pause in the music. Apparently, even a ballroom full of firefighter supporters occasionally needs a friendly evacuation plan.
Once seated, guests experienced the gala’s stirring ceremonial opening. The Houston Firefighter Honor Guard and Pipes and Drums presented the flags, followed by Firefighter Joe Rice, whose a cappella rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” brought the audience to its feet.
Sharing emcee duties, media personality Jennifer Reyna and HPFFA President Patrick M. “Marty” Lancton kept the program buoyant and engaging. Lancton introduced the Steins, who thanked the friends, family members, vendors and firefighters whose year-round efforts made the celebration possible.
Elizabeth then welcomed the presenting sponsors and honorary co-chair to the stage for the gala’s traditional personalized axes and trophies—recognition with unmistakable firefighter flair. Flowers and special thanks also honored six indispensable volunteers: Dee Darby, Amanda Davis, Betty DuBose, Jessica Sousson, Laura Elizabeth Stein and Scarlett Tyler.
Then the lights dimmed, the music surged and the firefighter calendar participants made their entrance.
Cue the cheers.
Houston’s bravest brought confidence, charisma and some impressively sculpted credentials to the runway, sending the room’s energy skyward. The spirited presentation celebrated the calendar’s role in supporting the foundation and the Burned Children’s Fund, giving all that applause a meaningful destination.
The emotional heart of the evening came through Texas Mattress Makers owner Youval Meicler’s account of the firefighters who came to his rescue during a heart attack. His video linked the urgency of an emergency call to the profound gratitude of a family whose loved one received help when every moment mattered.
His experience also offered a moving perspective on firefighters’ families: the people who watch someone they love leave for a shift, trusting they will return safely. Beyond the uniforms and sirens lie households living with the responsibilities of that extraordinary calling.
After dinner, auctioneer Vincent Montalbano set that goodwill into exhilarating motion.
A last-minute private dinner with Mayor John Whitmire and Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz, hosted at Gary Petersen’s home, sold for $26,000. The Garrison Brothers Whiskey experience followed at $25,000, keeping the bidding brisk and the competition spirited.
Adventures in Park City, South America and Snowmass, along with a United Airlines offering, added to the excitement. A Puerto Vallarta getaway proved so irresistible that it sold twice. By the time the live auction concluded, its total had climbed to a remarkable $166,000.
Montalbano followed with “Paddles Up,” giving guests another opportunity to turn appreciation into action before the celebration shifted into its exuberant after-party chapter.
The Moment Band brought the tempo roaring back as supporters returned for final bids and the Big Boards’ celebrated “Bid Off.” Firefighter calendar stars signed calendars and supplied memorable photo opportunities, demonstrating their strength by lifting delighted guests.
The night had room for solemn gratitude, playful showmanship, heartfelt recognition and a dance-worthy finale. Through it all, the purpose held steady: supporting firefighters and strengthening their connection with the city they serve.
And when the final tally reached $835,000, Houston had delivered an answer worthy of its bravest.
Consider that a five-alarm success!
